Should we get rid of the legislative filibuster?

The legislative filibuster is a tactic used in the U.S. Senate to delay voting on a bill, and a lot of people are tired of it. President Trump called for an end to the filibuster rule, believing it is largely responsible for the obstruction in Congress. And Trump's dislike of the filibuster is one actually shared by both parties. But others insist, though it may make processes slower, the filibuster is necessary to prevent a tyrannical majority party. What do you think?

What is a legislative filibuster? According to ThoughtCo, a filibuster is "a delaying tactic used in the United States Senate to block a bill, amendment, resolution, or other measure being considered by preventing it from coming to a final vote on passage."

The filibuster is often used by the minority party to prevent a vote from happening and requires a three-fifths majority vote (60 votes) to pass a "closure" motion and force the process to continue.

President Trump has called for an end to the legislative filibuster, which he feels only allows the minority party to obstruct.

And maybe Trump has a point. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz famously read Dr. Suess' "Green Eggs and Ham" during his filibuster of Obamacare. Is this really what our senators should be doing?

Though now that Cruz is no longer in the minority party, he also dislikes the filibuster.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says there's no way we're getting rid of the legislative filibuster.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) reiterated Tuesday that Republicans will not gut the 60-vote legislative filibuster despite public pressure from President Trump.
"There are not the votes in the Senate, as I've said repeatedly to the president and to all of you, to change the rules of the Senate," McConnell told reporters during a weekly leadership press conference.

It may be frustrating when you're the party in power, but the filibuster rule is meant to foster collaboration between parties. It forces the majority party to reach across the aisle in order to get important legislation passed. We need the legislative filibuster.
