Did Elizabeth Warren make things worse by taking a DNA test?

Sen. Elizabeth Warren released the results of a thorough DNA test, which she says shows conclusively she is of Native American heritage. Warren took the test after President Trump harassed her for years about her claims of Native heritage, frequently referring to her as "Pocahontas." Trump previously claimed he would donate $1 million to a non-profit of Warren's choice if she could prove she was Native American—but he is now claiming he never placed such a bet. Warren seems to hope the results will put this issue to rest, but others worry the results only validated Trump's claims. What do you think?

Warren released the results of the study to The Boston Globe, claiming she wanted to put the issue to rest.

Senator Elizabeth Warren has released a DNA test that provides “strong evidence’’ she had a Native American in her family tree dating back 6 to 10 generations, an unprecedented move by one of the top possible contenders for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.
..[Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor and expert in the field who won a 2010 MacArthur fellowship] calculated that Warren’s pure Native American ancestor appears in her family tree “in the range of 6-10 generations ago.” That timing fits Warren’s family lore, passed down during her Oklahoma upbringing, that her great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, was at least partially Native American.

Warren took the opportunity to call the president out for not releasing his tax returns, tweeting:

I took this test and released the results for anyone who cares to see because I’ve got nothing to hide. What are YOU hiding, @realDonaldTrump? Release your tax returns – or the Democratic-led House will do it for you soon enough. Tick-tock, Mr President.

There has already been push-back from conservatives over the DNA test. Vanity Fair quotes Republicans blowing the results off and implying that Warren has actually muddled the issue.

Whether Warren’s openness will pay off in an era of lightning-speed fake news and conspiracy theories, however, is an open question. ”I know that everybody likes to pick their junk science or sound science depending on the conclusion it seems some days,” Kellyanne Conway said on Monday morning. “But I haven’t looked at the DNA test and it really doesn’t interest me.” The Republican National Committee, too, cast doubt on the test results, saying that “this latest move is sure to raise even more difficult questions for Warren than it is to provide any clarity.”

Some writers have pointed out that the test has also shown that while Warren does have Native American ancestry, the connection is distant and tenuous. This has once again raised concerns about why she has been so public about such a distant relation throughout her career. Rolling Stone writer Jamil Smith tweeted

The Right’s charges that Warren’s Native American heritage was used to advance her career were always rubbish. However, it has never sat right with me that she changed her ethnic ID with her employers, feeling that she could such enjoy such racial flexibility without consequence.

Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi, however, claims the DNA test allows Warren to more effectively move past Trump's character attacks.

Now, with the DNA test, which was first reported by the Globe’s Annie Linsky, Warren took another extraordinary step to confront Trump’s mockery of her.
...Of course, his taunts were never really about the truth of her ethnicity. They were about belittling her, about painting her as loony and crazy. Trump uses similar insulting tactics against men. But he does it with special fervor against women. He knows that running against the “blah blah blah” gene is a useful political weapon with voters of all political persuasions.
With the DNA test, Warren may be able to blunt the “Pocahontas” attacks.

The Daily Beast wrote that anchors on Fox News were quick to belittle and disparage the DNA results, once again implying Warren is irrational.

“Why doesn’t she do 23andMe and just end this?” co-host Brian Kilmeade asked, seeming to miss the point of the news segment entirely.
Shimkus pointed out that Warren went “a little bit more serious with it” than that.
...“1/512th, so you’re saying there’s a chance,” Ainsley Earhardt added, simultaneously focusing on the outer edge of the estimate and butchering a quote from Dumb and Dumber.
