Does the Parkland shooter deserve the death penalty?

Nikolas Cruz has been formally charged with 17 counts of first-degree murder in the Parkland school shooting, and the Florida district attorney is seeking the death penalty. To many, Cruz is exactly the kind of monster who deserves death and his execution will give the victims' families some closure. Others think the death penalty is barbaric—he's clearly mentally ill, and executing a teenager is not going to stop the cycle of violence. Does the Parkland shooter deserve the death penalty?

The Florida state attorney's office cited seven aggravating factors in seeking the death penalty for Cruz, including that the crime was "especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel" and that it involved homicide "committed in a cold, calculated, and premeditated manner."

But others say killing him will solve nothing.

Even those who support capital punishment say Cruz is clearly a sick person, and that the system failed to stop him numerous times. Executing him will not fix the holes that allowed him to massacre 17 people.
