Disgraced ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner is pleading guilty to a charge of transferring obscene materials to a minor. The crime could land him in prison for up to 10 years, and he must now register as a sex offender. Some say 10 years behind bars seems excessively harsh just for exchanging illicit texts and images with someone. But critics say Weiner is indeed a predatorhe knew the girl was underage, and their relationship was explicitly sexual. Does Weiner belong behind bars?📱

Everyone agrees that Weiner's choices were reckless, stupid, and self-destructive. He blew up his marriage and his political career with his sexting obsession and his repeated lies about it. But does anyone really deserve a decade in prison for consensual sexual activity? Activity that virtually every person in America under 30 has engaged in? The Nation pointed out in 2013 that skeeving people out is not a crime:

Nothing Carlos Danger did was illegal or coercive, and, it should be pointed out, none of it actually involved physical contact. His behavior and his marriage are entirely unworthy of public concern.

The actual details of Weiner's latest imbroglio are worse than his previous misadventures, though. The girl in this case was a sophomore in high school, a fact that he knew. His detractors say this latest episode crossed the line from lewd to criminal.

Our Commander-in-Chief bragged about grabbing woman's genitals, but Anthony Weiner will be locked up for consensual sexual activity that never even involved physical contact? Cynics say this is just more American Puritanism. Maybe Weiner should just say it was locker room texting.

The age of the girl in question is a sticking point for many, however. She may technically have been a willing partner, but 15-year-olds are considered below the age of consent. Not to mention Weiner is 50. He crossed the pervert line for many.

And many people think he does deserve to do time.
