Rachel Maddow's tweet saying she had Trump's tax returns received 57,000 retweets and 72,000 likes in less than an hour. This enthusiasm shows Trump's critics still want to see his tax returns. They think he may be hiding something incriminating, or at the very least, it's a matter of principle and transparency. But Trump's supporters say no one outside of the media and Trump's critics actually cares. Do you want to see the returns? 🤔

Here's the tweet in question. At this point, no one was talking about the tax returns—but the reaction to Maddow's tweet shows just how much people are interested in seeing Trump's returns.

The White House responded, saying:

David Cay found the first two pages of Trump's returns and wrote about them at his site DCReport. Here's what he found:

Donald Trump earned more than $150 million in the year 2005—and paid just a small percentage of that in regular federal income taxes. Daily Beast contributor David Cay Johnston has obtained what appear to be the first two pages of Trump’s 2005 federal income tax return, and published an analysis of those pages on his website, DCReport.org. The Daily Beast could not independently verify these documents.
The documents show Trump and his wife Melania paying $5.3 million in regular federal income tax—a rate of less than 4% However, the Trumps paid an additional $31 million in the so-called “alternative minimum tax,” or AMT. Trump has previously called for the elimination of this tax.
