Maria Espinoza first approached Trump and other Republican candidates during the presidential campaign and asked for a federal office that would offer legal help and financial aid to families of victims killed by undocumented immigrants. The president believes the office is essential for the safety of the country.

"We are providing a voice to those who have been ignored by our media and silenced by special interests," he explained.

But others say VOICE is just a bid to exploit racism, xenophobia, and anti-immigrant sentiment in America. Illinois Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth called the initiative "horrifying" and said Trump was exploiting tragedy for his own political gain. Even conservative leaders questioned the motives for forming the office, and critics say it could lead to a rise in hate crime.

“This just continues the campaign strategy Donald Trump employed to vilify immigrants and identify them with a small number of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants,” said Brent A. Wilkes, chief executive of League of United Latin American Citizens.

But families whose relatives were killed by undocumented immigrants say this new office finally brings attention their loved ones deserve. They say the pain of losing a family member to violence is only exacerbated by the fact that if our immigration laws were actually being enforced, family members would still be alive today.

But critics of VOICE see a disturbing echo of Nazi Germany’s policy of publishing lists of crimes committed by Jews. Especially when decades worth of data clearly indicates immigrants are far less likely to commit crime than native-born U.S. citizens, many see VOICE as an attempt to spread dangerous misinformation about undocumented immigrants in America.
