Did Donald Trump leak his own tax returns?
Throughout his career, Trump has frequently posed as his own publicist, giving information to the press to manipulate coverage. Even David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and tax expert who received the return in the mail, thought they may have come from Trump.
“It’s entirely possible that Donald sent this to me,” Johnston told Maddow. “It’s a possibility, and it could have been leaked by someone in his direction.”
But Sean Hannity and other conservatives claimed the returns were stolen in an attempt to undermine president, as did the White House in a statement issued just before Maddow's broadcast.
"You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago."
Trump weighed in on his favorite platform, Twitter. Even though the White House did confirm the tax return pages were real, he called the whole episode "fake news."
Does anybody really believe that a reporter, who nobody ever heard of, "went to his mailbox" and found my tax returns? @NBCNews FAKE NEWS!
The Washington Post believes there is a good chance Trump is the source of the leak:
Trump has also proven himself a master of deflection, habitually taking to Twitter to distract from the day’s controversies. As David Smith of the Guardian noted, “It would be a classic Trump tactic to deflect attention from his troubles with wire-tapping claims and replacing the healthcare law.”
