Are Democrats moving too far to the left?

Speaking to a group of wealthy Democratic donors, former President Barack Obama called for moderation among Democratic contenders because “the average American doesn’t think we have to completely tear down the system and remake it.” There's currently a split over the best strategy to defeat President Trump. Should the Democrats put forward a moderate platform and candidate to win over Trump voters? Or should it put forward an ambitious and progressive platform that would bring out new voters? What do you think?

Obama vocalized the worries of the Democratic donor class. They believe that a moderate path forward is most likely to defeat President Trump. Trump won by extremely slim margins thanks to a few swing states. By focusing on breaking away voters from Trump's base, a moderate candidate is more likely to win against President Trump and denying him a second term.

While Mr. Obama did not single out any specific primary candidate or policy proposal, he cautioned that the universe of voters that could support a Democratic candidate — Democrats, independents and moderate Republicans — are not driven by the same views reflected on “certain left-leaning Twitter feeds” or “the activist wing of our party.”
“Even as we push the envelope and we are bold in our vision we also have to be rooted in reality,” Mr. Obama said. “The average American doesn’t think we have to completely tear down the system and remake it.”

Other Democrats believe the way forward is to win through the strengths of their ideas and policies. Fighting for things like a higher minimum wage, Medicare for All and other progressive policies would not only tackle structural issues within American society, it would bring out new voters that would change the political landscape. The fact that Trump is President shows that there's something deeply wrong with the system.

Here's how Senator Bernie Sanders put it:

“The agenda that we have is an agenda supported by the vast majority of working people,” he said. “When I talk about raising the minimum wage to a living wage, I’m not tearing down the system. We’re fighting for justice. When I talk about health care being a human right and ending the embarrassment of America being the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care for every man, woman and child, that’s not tearing down the system. That’s doing what we should have done 30 years ago.”
