Did Democrats cave in the shutdown battle? | The Tylt
Only three days into the government shutdown, Democrats agreed to vote on a spending bill that will re-open the government for another three weeks. President Trump then sent out an email out to supporters with the subject line: "Democrats CAVED." Many on the left are angry that Democrats didn't hold their ground to protect DREAMers. But others argue the Democrats are playing smart politics. They got CHIP funded and can now shut down the government if Republicans refuse to reach a DACA deal in three weeks. What do you think?
Did Democrats cave in the shutdown battle?
We will vote today to reopen the government, to continue negotiating a global agreement, with the commitment that, if an agreement is not reached by Feb 8th, the Senate will immediately proceed to consideration of legislation dealing with DACA. The process will be neutral & fair.— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) January 22, 2018
The Majority Leader’s comments fell far short of the ironclad guarantee I needed to support a stopgap spending bill. I refuse to put the lives of nearly 700,000 young people in the hands of someone who has repeatedly gone back on his word.— Kamala Harris (@SenKamalaHarris) January 22, 2018
For a minute it felt like they were standing for us. Like Democrats were finally listening to our pain and doing something about it. Standing up for us. Man, this hurts so much. It's been 17 years! 17 years of inaction, deportations, waiting, hope, disappointment. I am so tired.— Erika Andiola - #NoDreamNoDeal (@ErikaAndiola) January 22, 2018
The Democrats appear to have caved. Rather than continuing to insist that DACA, opioids, and their other demands be addressed, it looks as though they have taken a deal to end the shutdown that relies upon a @SenateMajLdr promise. If so, they are fools. https://t.co/aBtXXooySR pic.twitter.com/XPhMI6umRu— Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) January 22, 2018
Democrats won multiple battles:— Scott Dworkin (@funder) January 22, 2018
-We got CHIP funded
-We reopened the Gov’t
-We got a commitment from the GOP that we get a DACA vote in the next few weeks
-If they are lying then the Gov’t shuts down again before DACA expires
GOP caved, GOP lost big time
It’s time #TrumpResign
I don't understand the 'Democrats caved' argument. CHIP finally got extended, the government reopens, and in 2.5 weeks if Republicans still won't protect Dreamers, there's another shutdown. At that point Republicans can't exploit kids' health as a bargaining chip.— Dana Nuccitelli (@dana1981) January 22, 2018
