Did Democrats cave in the shutdown battle?

Only three days into the government shutdown, Democrats agreed to vote on a spending bill that will re-open the government for another three weeks. President Trump then sent out an email out to supporters with the subject line: "Democrats CAVED." Many on the left are angry that Democrats didn't hold their ground to protect DREAMers. But others argue the Democrats are playing smart politics. They got CHIP funded and can now shut down the government if Republicans refuse to reach a DACA deal in three weeks. What do you think?

Only three days into the government shutdown, Democrats agreed to a spending bill that would re-open the government for another three weeks.

In a last-minute decision, Senate Democrats agreed to pass a spending bill that would fund the federal government through February 8, and fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program for six years, with an assurance from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to negotiate some kind of immigration deal within that time period and put a bill on the floor for a vote.

Immediately after Congress voted to re-open the government, President Trump sent an email to supporters titled: "Democrats CAVED."

The White House branded the government freeze the "Schumer shutdown" despite the fact that the majority of American blame Trump and Republicans for the shutdown.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer assured Democrats that he fully expected Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will keep his promise to allow a DACA deal to be reached in the coming weeks.

But not everyone is convinced McConnell will keep his promise. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) was critical of the decision and was one of 16 Democrats who voted against re-opening the government without protections for DREAMers.

DREAMer Erika Andiola expressed disappointment in what she viewed as the Democrats reneging on their promise to protect DACA recipients at all costs.

Others think Democrats are insane to believe McConnell can be trusted.

But some argue Democrats are actually playing smart politics. They got funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) which means Republicans can no longer use it as leverage.

And if Republicans renege on their promise to reach a DACA deal, Democrats can just shut down the government again in three weeks.
