After allegations of sexual misconduct mounted against Al Franken and over 20 Democratic Senators called on him to resign, Franken announced he would be leaving the Senate. Many progressives believe Democrats did the right thing by forcing Franken out, but others feel it was a huge mistake. The allegations against Franken were far less serious than those against Roy Moore and President Trump, and Democrats should've let the ethics investigation play out. What do you think? 🗡️

Many believe the Democrats did the right thing by forcing Al Franken to resign. How could they call themselves the party that stands firmly against sexual harassment while allowing someone like Franken to remain in the Senate?

“For the last decade, Democrats have been pointing the finger at the Republican Party for devaluing women,” said Guy Cecil, chairman of Priorities USA and the executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee during the 2012 and 2014 cycles. “This is a requirement to be able to look at them with a straight face and say we’re the party that cares about them.”

But others feel Democrats made a huge mistake. Franken did everything right: he apologized to Leeann Tweeden (who accepted his apology), welcomed an ethics investigation into himself and never once smeared his accusers. Franken was accused of unwanted touching and kissing, which pales into comparison to what President Trump and Roy Moore have been accused of. If Democrats were seeking to claim the "moral high ground" by expelling Franken, it was hardly a good political calculation.

We no longer inhabit a closed ethical system, in which morality and norm preservation are their own rewards. We live in a broken and corroded system in which unilateral disarmament is going to destroy the very things we want to preserve.
Unilateral disarmament is tantamount to arming the other side. That may be a trade worth making in some cases. But it’s worth at least acknowledging that this is the current calculus. It’s no longer that when they go low, we get to go high. They are permanently living underground. How long can we afford to keep living in the clouds?
