Is Bernie Sanders too old to run in 2020?

Many political insiders believe Bernie Sanders is preparing for another presidential run in 2020, and his supporters are very excited about it. Skeptics say at age 79, the Vermont senator will be way too old for the job. But others think he has the best odds against President Trump, and blaming his age is just an excuse. What do you think? 👴🏻

Political insiders are pretty confident Sen. Bernie Sanders is preparing for another presidential run in 2020... which has some people asking: how old is too old to run for president? Sanders will be 79 in 2020, and many believe Democrats should embrace a younger candidate to represent them.

Former DNC chair Howard Dean suggested old people ought to get out of politics and make way for a younger generation of leaders:

"I’m very much for someone who is younger. I think my generation needs to get the hell out of politics... Start coaching and start moving up this next generation who are more, I think, fiscally sane."

But supporters of the Vermont senator say age is not an issue. Donald Trump is 71, Hillary Clinton is 70 and Elizabeth Warren is 68. Democrats should run their best candidate and not let something as trivial as age determine who is nominated.

“He is the only honest candidate that I have seen in the last 20 years,” Ms. Spiteri-Phillips said as she wiped her eyes. “I’m not concerned about his age. He’s been kicking butt for the last 70 years.”

But many still argue Sanders is just too old to run again. If he won, he would be the oldest man ever elected, and running someone older than Trump is just bad politics. The younger generation deserves a chance to pave the future of the country. Howard Dean has the right idea, old people need to get out of the way.

Setting some “cap” on the age of presidential candidates is inherently an arbitrary exercise. But in terms of 2020, the logical rule would be that Democrats should not consider as nominees anyone older than Trump himself, who will turn 74 during the general-election campaign. Democrats should let him be the one to parry questions and concerns about age and health.
