The organizers of the convention also organized the Women's March. They acknowledged the controversy and defended the choice of Sanders in a statement, saying that the media had exaggerated Sanders' prominence at the convention.

Others argued the choice was completely tone-deaf.

Defenders of the choice say Sanders is a rock-solid ally for women, and that it would be hypocritical for a feminist movement to be exclusionary: they need to partner with and include strong allies, male or female.

But even people who have no problem with Sanders himself say the choice is a poor one. It's not as if Bernie doesn't have a platform or daily invitations from the mainstream media to offer his take. Why not use this opportunity to elevate the voices of female leaders that the media and establishment aren't paying attention to?

And others argue Bernie is not a staunch advocate for women's rights. He's endorsed several anti-choice candidates since the election, and has consistently defended Trump voters from accusations of racism, misogyny and homophobia. His critics say he will always put the (male) white working class and his revolution first.

But supporters say this uproar is just Hillary loyalists letting their hatred of Bernie blind them to the fact that this convention IS actually centering women of color. Maxine Waters is the keynote speaker, not Bernie.

Bashing the women of color who are organizing the convention and invited Sanders looks pretty hypocritical. How about respecting their choice?

Some people who had already purchased tickets to the convention want their money refunded.

And for others, this has nothing to do with Hillary, Bernie or the 2016 election. Women should lead at a women's convention, period.

But many say the organizers owe apologies to no one on this choice: Sanders' agenda is the best one for women,  and that the convention does center women of color. Having Bernie as a speaker doesn't change that.
