Is Bernie Sanders a Democrat?

Bernie Sanders has long declined to declare any party affiliation, preferring to refer to himself as an independent. However, when the time has come to declare his candidacy for president, Sanders has readily joined up with the Democratic Party. At the start of the 2020 presidential cycle, Sanders agreed to sign a party pledge affirming his affiliation with the Democratic Party. But critics say it’s too little, too late. What do you think?

Rep. Gregory Meeks told CNN he felt Sanders had not shown the appropriate affiliation with the Democratic Party and therefore should be running as an independent.

"If, in fact, you want to be the Democratic nominee, you should be a Democrat," the New York Democrat said. "If you're not a Democrat, you should not run. He should run as an independent. He's not a Democrat. So to me, I would not allow a Republican to run as a Democrat or for the Democratic nomination."

Many people have called attention to Sanders' seeming willingness to flip sides and join the Democratic Party when it was most expedient to his causes. Per the Root

Sanders is the kid that kicks it with the jocks but lightweight talks shit about them when he isn’t around them. He’s the drama kid that doesn’t want to be called a dramaturge in public. He caucuses with the Dems but then points out to anyone who asks that he’s an independent. At this point, I kind of want Sanders to have all the seats. I want Sanders to rent a bus and then sit in any seat he likes. Now would’ve been a nice time for him to sit his ass down and let a black woman handle this because she’s got it covered. It also would’ve shown that he is willing to play nicely with those in the party that he keeps wanting everything and nothing to do with.

Sanders has been frequently criticized for refusing to caucus with the Democrats, only to seek their party's nomination when the time comes. According to Politifact, though, his reticence to declare a party doesn't really matter.

Sanders said, "Of course I am a Democrat and running for the Democratic nomination."
...So can Sanders accurately claim to be unaffiliated with a political party while still running for the Democratic nomination and sometimes calling himself a Democrat?
It may seem oxymoronic, but yes, he can.
In November, Sanders announced that he was full-fledged Democrat and declared as a Democrat in New Hampshire. But, as we previously noted, he’s still calling himself an independent in some cases, so it’s unclear how committed Sanders is to any label.

Basically if Sanders says he's a Democrat, he is one.

However, Sanders has made himself an active part of the Democratic Party, drawing avowed party voters to his causes. He has also managed to steer the party's platform since his campaign in 2016. Per FiveThirtyEight

Engaged Democratic voters will know that Sanders’s brand is populist — free college, $15 minimum wage, “Medicare for all” — and polemical. The senator’s early charm in 2016 seemed to lie in his harangues against an unmitigated free-market system and the need for political revolution. In the age of President Trump, many Democrats might be looking for a pure-of-heart angry warrior figure in their candidate — someone with a distinct brand of politics that hasn’t been formed solely in reaction to the president. Sanders certainly is that.
