HUD Secretary Ben Carson is proposing legislation that would triple rent for low-income Americans receiving federal housing subsidies. According to The Washington Post, the move would affect more than 4.5 million Americans who rely on federal housing assistance.

Tenants generally pay 30 percent of their adjusted income toward rent or a public housing agency minimum rent — which is capped at $50 a month for the poorest families. The administration’s legislative proposal sets the family monthly rent contribution at 35 percent of gross income or 35 percent of their earnings working 15 hours a week at the federal minimum wage. Under the proposal, the cap for the poorest families would rise to approximately $150 a month, three times higher than the current minimum.

Some find the latest news particularly egregious given the $31,000 Carson spent on a dining set using taxpayer dollars. It's inhumane to go after the poorest of the poor while treating yourself to luxury furniture.

This is the final straw for many. Carson's misuse of taxpayer money and inability to do his job well just prove he wasn't qualified to head HUD in the first place.

But Carson argues his approach to housing subsidies will actually help the poor by putting them on a path to self-efficiency.

And others feel liberals have an irrational hatred of Carson simply because he is a Trump ally.
