Are the delegates disrupting the DNC righteous or ridiculous? | The Tylt
Opening day of the Democratic National Convention was rocky to say the least. NPR reported:
Supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders disrupted the proceedings throughout the night with boos and jeers. A night that was supposed to mark the beginning of a party coalescing behind its presidential nominee was instead punctuated by acts of division.
Delegates interrupted the opening invocation and numerous speakers, frequently responding to mentions of Hillary Clinton's name with chants of "Bernie! Bernie!"
Are the disruptive Sanders delegates being righteous? Or ridiculous?
Hard-core Sanders supporters have been saying the DNC was biased towards Hillary their candidate, and the DNC leaks confirm it. They think Clinton stole the nomination from Sanders, and consider her so evil that they have to speak out against her. They feel the DNC's unethical behavior warrants their disruption, and they see their chanting and booing as righteous political protest against a corrupt, undemocratic organization and process. Some think Sanders could still be nominated. The DNC behaved horribly towards them and their cause — so who is the DNC to tell them to behave at the convention?
But critics think the disruptive delegates are (in the words of Sarah Silverman) "being ridiculous." The DNC may have behaved unethically, but they did not rig or steal the election from Sen. Sanders — Clinton won by more than four million votes. The DNC acknowledged their wrongdoing and apologized. Many Democrats are appalled that Sanders loyalists are parroting right-wing chants like "Lock her up!" and calling Clinton a criminal. Shouting "Black lives matter" at Sen. Cory Booker, yelling about the Trans-Pacific Partnership at Rep. Elijah Cummings (who voted against it), and booing progressive heroes like Elizabeth Warren does not further progressive causes. And when they booed Sen. Sanders for urging them to support Clinton, they crossed into farce territory.
#DNCRighteous or #DNCRidiculous? What do you think?
