Should American kids be required to say the Pledge of Allegiance?

A Houston public high school student was suspended after refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. Many argue that forcing students to recite a loyalty pledge against their will violates their free speech rights and is inherently un-American. But others are outraged that students would be permitted to skip the pledge. Should saying the Pledge of Allegiance be mandatory in American schools? 🇺🇸 🏫

Free speech legal expert Eugene Volokh points out the Supreme Court already handed down a decision on this matter in the 1940s. 

W. Va. Board of Education v. Barnette (1943) concluded that the government—including public schools—can’t require students to participate in the pledge... And while that case focused on the requirement that students say the Pledge of Allegiance and salute the flag, its logic applies just as much to requirements that people stand.

Others say reciting the pledge should be mandatory because it's teaching American children to respect our flag and honor our country, and these are values we have every right to instill in our kids.

But some feel that forcing kids to recite a daily loyalty oath smacks of Orwellian mind control.

At Common Sense, Fernando Betancor points out there are only five states where the Pledge of Allegiance is not explicitly required in schools. Clearly, state governments and many school administrators disagree with the ACLU and the Supreme Court on this matter.
