Is America still the leader of the free world?
From the Iran nuclear deal—a painstakingly negotiated agreement involving several of America’s top European allies—to the Paris climate accords, Trump has angered allies by essentially tearing up American agreements. His supporters say he's doing what's best for the country, but critics say alienating our trading partners and destabilizing Western alliances does nothing to put America first.
The president himself has claimed victory and success, both in terms of our trade agreements with Canada and our negotiations with Korea. Many Americans prefer a U.S. foreign policy that does not prioritize or rely on cooperation or consensus from other nations, and say this is what "America First" looks like.
It’s not about that it’s about the reason for doing it. Trump seems to put America first in his decision making unlike Obama.
Leaders of the free world don't publicly fawn over sociopathic despots who put hundreds of thousands of their citizens in brutal labor camps, violently oppress dissenters, and starve millions of their people. Some international observers say the United States may never recover its reputation as a defender of democracy after this summit.
So we should go back to what hasn’t worked for the last 20-30 years? Trump has broken the mold and for the first time this century, America is engaging the world again as a leader of Peace thru Strength. And the world is witnessing the results. https://t.co/PQcWeC2WkW
Others point out that "America First" was originally a white nationalist slogan. We can't be admired or respected in the world, or taken seriously on issues of democratic freedoms and human rights when our political leaders ignore or even cater to racism and white supremacy.
Though many were aghast at Trump's treatment of our allies and trading partners at the G7, others admired his defiant and even disdainful stance. His supporters say America has been pushed around and taken advantage of on the world stage, and Trump is finally putting a stop to it.
Truly amazing to watch the media’s breathless panic attack as President @realDonaldTrump advocates for the American worker instead of wining, dining, and cozying up to other world leaders. #AmericaFirst
Others argue that after our behavior both at home and abroad, it's no wonder our allies have lost faith in us. Selfishness, shortsightedness, xenophobia, and human rights abuses do nothing to advance our political, economic, or moral standing. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is now the true leader of the free world.
Sadly as of Tonight America is no longer the leader of the free World, America does not greet and shake hands with brutal dictators that have no respect for human life or human rights. Maybe someday we will lead the way again, maybe we won't.
