A new Senate bill will require women to register for the draft. Good idea? | The Tylt
Women may soon be required to register for the military draft.
The $602 billion defense bill passed by the Senate Tuesday includes an amendment that would require women to register for the draft when they turn 18. The New York Times reported that "The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties." The bill passed with overwhelming support, 85-13.
Now that all military positions, including combat roles, have been opened to women, the majority of US military leaders have stated women should be included in the Selective Service.
"The mandate has angered social conservatives, who fear the mandate is another step toward blurring gender lines," said the Associated Press. Opponent Steven Bucci says "the policy implications of such a shift could be disastrous for women and for the military." The group Heritage Action for America criticized the move saying it prioritized "liberal social engineering [more] than military objectives and preparedness."
Proponents of the new measure point to women's exemplary combat service in the Israeli military. And even conservative John McCain responded to Ted Cruz's strenuous objections by saying “I respect the senator from Texas’s view. Too bad that view is not shared by our military leadership, the ones who have had the experience in combat with women.”
Should women be drafted? What do you think?
