Should the 25th Amendment be invoked on President Trump?

President Trump's bungled response to the coronavirus will cause around 200,000 American deaths in a best-case scenario. His continued mismanagement of the situation has exacerbated a shortage of ventilators to save victims of COVID-19 and personal protective equipment to protect medical professionals. In short, the United States is not prepared for this outbreak and people will die. Some people have floated the idea of invoking the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump—Mike Pence would be at least less erratic and antagonistic than Trump.

However, Republicans and Trump's supporters show no sign of breaking with the president. Despite months of inaction and downplaying the severity of the virus, as well as cutting the White House pandemic response team, President Trump argues he does not bear responsibility for this crisis—he blames previous presidents and China for covering up the situation.

Invoking the 25th Amendment would put Mike Pence, a stalwart Republican, in charge. There would be no significant departure from the current policy but it would remove President Trump's toxic personality and management style from the equation. It is difficult to imagine a person worse than President Trump to lead the United States through a crisis. Especially one of this magnitude.

Republicans are enabling a uniquely bad man to damage the United States and in this case—literally cause the death of thousands of Americans.

President Trump's supporters think Trump's actions have already mitigated some of the worst, and he is doing his best in a difficult situation.
