Who should play Disney's Mulan: Fan Bingbing or Brenda Song? | The Tylt
Concerned fans and 18MR, a site which advocates for Asian Americans, started a petition demanding Disney use Asian filmmakers and actors in the live-action remake of "Mulan." After false rumors circulated that Jennifer Lawrence would play Mulan, Disney announced the lead character will definitely be portrayed by a Chinese actress. While there's no lead yet, here are two popular fan choices to take on the role of Mulan—Fan Bingbing and Brenda Song. Which actress should play Mulan? 🎥🌟
Who should play Disney's Mulan: Fan Bingbing or Brenda Song?
Here's the synopsis of the animated "Mulan," released in 1998, according to the IMDB:
To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China's greatest heroines in the process.
"Mulan" fans have been advocating for their individual picks for awhile now. Several high-profile Asian actresses have been tossed around. Jamie Chung is one popular choice; she has played Mulan on the hit ABC fantasy drama "Once Upon a Time." But Chung is Korean-American, not Chinese or Chinese-American.
And most fans want an actress of Chinese descent to play Mulan, because Mulan is Chinese! But two distinctly Chinese actresses have appeared on many fan casting lists—Bingbing and Song. Fans have laid out persuasive cases for both actresses.

Bingbing is an acclaimed and popular actress in Asia, but most American audiences know her from "X-Men: Days of Future Past" as the mutant teleporter Blink. She played a key part in the X-Men's survival in the film's dystopian future.

Song kicked so much butt in "Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior," and has grown from Disney child star to popular actress. Song has the screen appeal that audiences want for Mulan. She would totally pull of Mulan's strength, independence and rebellious streak. Fans argue Song would be perfect for the role of Mulan!

Bingbing is so talented. While there's debate over if the "Mulan" remake will include music, Bingbing definitely has the musical chops needed to portray Mulan if the movie goes in that direction.

While Song doesn't have the strongest voice, she has a lot of potential to work with. Most Disney child stars are required to have some type of musical talent anyways, and she's got it.

Bingbing has already paid homage to Mulan. See for yourself.
But Song has her ride-or-die fans too!
Disney might decide to keep it all in the family, and take on Song as Mulan.
