Who's the greatest horror hero: Ripley or Ash?
Ripley is the quintessential female horror hero. She's a fully-developed female character who kicks alien ass on the regular.. In "Alien" (1979), Ripley is a warrant officer abroad the spaceship Nostromo on its way back to Earth. An alien creature attacks her spaceship and SPOILER kills off the crew. She survives, but not before she gets to blow up the spaceship. Ripley continued to lead in a war against the aliens over the course of three more films! For "Aliens" (1986), Sigourney Weaver garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Her role was so iconic that it became the first ever performance from a sci-fi film to be nominated at the Oscars.
Ashley Williams starts off as a young man who visited a cabin in the woods where his friends had been killed off by the evil dead. Then, he starts to lose his mind and his hand. In place of it he had a chainsaw. In the other hand, he holds a shotgun. It's then the young man becomes the ultimate ass-kicker of the demons.
She's not a sidekick, arm candy, or a damsel to be rescued. Starting with Alien, Ripley was a fully competent member of a crew or ensemble — not always liked and sometimes disrespected, but doing her job all the same.
Empire called Ash the "Dirty Harry of Deadites (the evil dead)." The magazine voted Ash as the 25th greatest movie character of all time. Ripley is #5, but we got to admit that the chainsaw and the shotgun makes Ash quite the horror icon.
