Justin Timberlake became a teen heartthrob as co-frontman of NSYNC. He scored mega-hits with the boy band—including "I Want You Back," "Tearin' Up My Heart," "Bye Bye Bye," "It's Gonna Be Me," "Pop," and "Gone" between 1996 and 2000.

But it's his solo career that has many calling him the Prince of Pop and Michael Jackson's heir to the throne. And like MJ with Jackson 5, Timberlake got his start with a boy band and then graduated to solo superstar success. JT can sing, dance, play the piano, write songs and entertain his behind off. And that's exactly why he has so many hits under his belt, and why has been so revered.

Timberlake scored several mega-hits with his debut LP "Justified," including "Cry Me a River," "Rock Your Body" and "Señorita." But "FutureSex/LoveSounds" topped the Billboard 200 Albums and is his best-selling album with three #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "SexyBack", "My Love", and "What Goes Around... Comes Around." Three years after his solo debut, Timberlake was experimenting with a mature sound and becoming a sex symbol".

After JT topped the charts and toured around the world, he moved into acting. It took him seven years to make his grand return to pop music, and he did just that in 2013 with "The 20/20 Experience" and "The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2." Timberlake topped the charts like he never left them—proving that unlike other artists, he didn't have to constantly put out new music in order to stay relevant. Being the true Prince of Pop means fans (referred to as Timberlakers) wait for your grand return rather than abandon you.

Below are some significant lyrics to Timberlake's biggest hit, "SexyBack," per Genius

🎶 I'm bringin' Sexy Back (yeah). Them other fuckers don't know how to act (yeah). Come let me make up for the things you lack (yeah). Cause you're burning up, and I gotta get it fast (yeah). Take it to the bridge.🎶

Biebs is today's biggest male artist. Yeah, Bruno Mars, the Weeknd, Shawn Mendes, Zayn Malik and Timberlake himself are all pop competition for Bieber, but he stays topping the charts these days. Biebs has grown up from teenybopper to troubled heartthrob to adult pop superstar.

His top-selling "Purpose" LP showcased a much more mature sound and musical style for Bieber, producing three #1 smashes on the Billboard Hot 100: "What Do You Mean?," "Sorry" and "Love Yourself." But his reign as the ultimate male pop singer only started in 2015, before then he was a teen pop sensation.

Bieber's features on DJ Khaled's "I'm the One" and Luis Fonsi/Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" are his latest #1 hits on the Hot 100. In fact, "Despacito" replaced "I'm the One" on the official chart. And "Despacito," the presumptive Song of the Summer, could potentially top Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" for the record of most weeks atop the Hot 100. But his new hit "Friends" is expected to the top the Hot 100, replacing "Despacito." Even with so many other pop crooners winning, the only artist Bieber is really competing with is himself.

Below are some notable lyrics to the biggest hit of 2016—"Love Yourself," per Genius.

🎶' Cause if you like the way you look that much. Oh baby you should go and love yourself. And if you think that I'm still holdin' on to somethin'. You should go and love yourself.🎶

JT ruled the charts in 2013 with his grand return on "The 20/20 Experience." RKD wrote that he's the true Prince of Pop, and JT smartly channeled his inner MJ:

On his 2002 solo debut, Justified, Justin Timberlake took inspiration from Michael Jackson, just as many artists had before him and will continue to do so until music ceases to exist. On his 2006 follow up, Futuresex/Lovesounds, it was Prince he referenced, and on this year’s The 20/20 Experience, he channeled both the Bee Gees and himself. For his new single, “Take Back The Night,” things have come full circle as the modern-day Prince of Pop takes notes from the King once again.

Though Bieber's record label began calling him the Prince of Pop, the honorific title has stuck with Beliebers. And this is rightfully so, since Biebs is dominating the pop game these days. Back in 2012, Billboard wrote:

The first time we meet, on the set for his Billboard cover shoot, Justin Bieber accidentally moonwalks, Michael Jackson-style, right back into me. It's a moment of youthful spontaneity that at once confirms he's not kidding around about his King of Pop obsession and inadvertently upends the narrative that's being woven about his impending release, "Believe," due out June 19: that this is the debut of a new, mature Bieber.

#TeamTimberlake because Timberlake's longevity as the Prince of Pop proves he's the worthy heir to Michael Jackson.

Timberlake was here first, and he has reigned over pop music as both a boy band frontman and a solo artist for 20 years! JT set the foundation for Bieber to win.

Yet, with another hit that just dropped—"Friends"—Beliebers believe he is the true Prince of Pop.
