Was Stephen Lang snubbed for the role of Cable in 'Deadpool 2'? | The Tylt
Josh Brolin was just cast as Cable in "Deadpool 2." Fans are pleasantly surprised the acclaimed actor will portray the badass, time traveling X-Men character in the sequel to "Deadpool" and the forthcoming "X-Force" franchise. But some critics are pissed that Brolin is playing two Marvel characters—Fox's Cable and MCU's Thanos. Others say fan-favorite choice Stephen Lang deserves the role of Cable. Lang campaigned hard for it, but then said his schedule is tight. Fans still argue Lang was snubbed. What do you think?
Was Stephen Lang snubbed for the role of Cable in 'Deadpool 2'?
Here's a quick history on Cable from Hollywood Reporter's Graeme McMillan:
For everyone else, however, the casting leaves one big question: Who is Cable, anyway?
Cable's backstory, as it would eventually be revealed, was this: Cable is the son of the X-Men's Cyclops and his then-wife, Madelyne Pryor. That baby had debuted in 1986's Uncanny X-Men No. 201, and would eventually be sent into the far future in 1991's X-Factor No. 68 to save him from a virus that would otherwise have led to his death. (In the meantime, Madelyne had been revealed to have been a clone of Jean Grey, who had been dead and then come back to life again because it was a different clone who had died.)
But that's only a piece of his backstory. Cable's history is complicated, but fans love his depth and significance to the X-Men franchise. In other words, he's a big deal to X-Men fans who are chomping at the bit to see him on the big screen.
So, fans were obviously shocked Brolin—an unknown contender—got the role of Cable. Some fans have warmed to the news, but others feel Lang never got the chance to prove he's perfect for the role. Lang has experience taking on solider-like roles in the science-fiction and fantasy genres. Brolin is an Academy-Award nominated actor who has taken on an array of roles over the years.
Was casting Brolin a surprise, but great choice for Cable—or should Fox have listened to the fans?
Brolin is Thanos and Cable now? Fans are saying "naw man."
I don't know why Josh Brolin thinks he can be Thanos AND Cable but I guess rules don't apply to these Hollywood types.— Linda Ge (@lindazge) April 12, 2017
Others are like, "The fuck, man?!! Lang is Cable, and Cable is Lang!"
They spelled Stephen Lang all wrong— Shanelle Little (@ShanelleLittle) April 12, 2017
I am Disappointed.
Disappointed is me.
EVERYONE KNOWS THE REAL CABLE IS ON INTO THE BADLANDS
Stephen Lang is right there!!! Ron Perlman is right there!!! Joe Manganiello is right there!!! and Yall choose fucking Josh Brolin? Fuck Off— Cartoons and Cereal (@BlckBolex) April 12, 2017
Brolin might be an unexepected choice to portray Cable, but fans are living for the surprise casting.
I’m kind of embarrassed I hadn’t thought of Brolin as a contender for Cable. He’s a great choice all around.— Paul Shirey (@arcticninjapaul) April 12, 2017
This is basically what happened.
Ha! That's so Ryan.
It may be smart to portray as many iconic comic book characters as possible. It's not like Cable and Thanos are anything alike or part of the same movie universe.
