Is $50 too much for a T-shirt?

Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” taught us a lot. Released on this day back in 2012, the infectious bop taught us to appreciate our grandparents' style; that green shoes look great with an all-pink get-up; and that if you buy used sheets for only $0.99, they’ll probably smell like bodily fluids. Yet the most pressing debate exposed by the song remains: Is $50 way too much for a T-shirt? Is it truly justifiable to spend so much on so plain an item of clothing? Or is the quality worth it? Well, is it?

You only have 20 bucks in your pocket—why in Target’s name would you spend any more than that on a T-shirt? Macklemore is completely right in chastising those who break bank on what is arguably the plainest (although also the most versatile) of the closet brood.

Macklemore knows what’s up. While everyone else was bragging about having all those bees in the trap and Lamborghinis, Macklemore taught the millennial generation financial responsibility. As opposed to dropping bills on whatever was in vogue at the time, he made us take a step back and go, “Whoa, is this item really worth the money?”

There’s treating yourself, then there’s wasting your entire livelihood. Macklemore showed the world that you can dive into a secondhand store and resurface with some pretty sick treasures. Maybe avoid those broken keyboards, though.

On the other hand, fabulosity has no price. That T-shirt may be 50 dollars, sure, but did you check out its quality? See its cut? Consider how long it’ll last you compared to that 10 dollar T-shirt, which shrinks after the first wash? No—it would appear you didn’t.

Yes, financial cognizance is important to establish, but there are certifiable reasons as to why some items are priced higher than others. Macklemore is positively promoting being cheap, a trait which most people would deem as negative. Hell, he buys sheets that smell like piss, but clearly doesn’t care just because they were 99 cents.

We say pop those tags. If you’re going to buy something for yourself, make it new and shiny. Your come-up will still be awesome and, most importantly, will smell as fresh as you look.
