Biggest twist in a horror movie: 'The Sixth Sense' or 'The Others'?

Twists are practically expected in horror movies now. If the killer gets shot nine times, there’s a silent understanding that—as impossible as that is for anyone apart from 50 Cent—the guy is most likely not dead. In fact, it's almost more shocking when there's no twist. Some twists, however, remain absolutely mind-blowing. “The Sixth Sense” has one pitted in a story about a clairvoyant child as well as “The Others,” a film about an isolated mother and her children. Which was more shocking?

M. Night Shyamalan is similar to Nicholas Cage in that he started out as extremely credible then slowly degraded into a farce. Before he was an inside joke, though, he was a burgeoning writer and director making his way in small films and teen comedies. Then 1999 came along, and M. Night Shyamalan released “The Sixth Sense.”

“The Sixth Sense” tells the story of a child psychologist, Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis), who takes on a particularly peculiar case. Cole (Haley Joel Osment) is a reserved boy that not only has some of the most obnoxious schoolmates of all times, but has a very, shall we say, unusual skill. In one of the most over-quoted movie lines of all times, Cole can see dead people

As you could imagine, Cole is stressed. But now that he has someone that actually listens to him, he and Dr. Crowe pair up to see just what these spirits want. Beneath the terrifying facades and super extra entrances, all these ghosts need is a little help so they can finally be at peace. But, no, that’s not the twist. Warning: spoiler alert ahead (although, seriously, how have you not seen this movie?).

Don’t care about spoilers? Loser. But basically, turns out Dr. Crowe is himself a ghost. The only way he can go to the other side is by helping a child in need, as he’s (figuratively) haunted by a past mistake. It’s beautiful, it’s emotional, and it made Haley Joel Osment richer than any of us way before he hit puberty. Not much of a shock there.

We all know kids are creepy. Make them super light sensitive and British, and their creepiness shoots up to an 11. Then place those children in a film like “The Others,” and feel those tiny hairs on your arms stand right up.

“The Others” is a film that stars Nicole Kidman as Grace, a religious woman who lives with her two children in an isolated mansion. Awaiting her missing husband to return from war, Grace has more than a few worries she’s concerned with. The first is that both her children could die if exposed to sunlight, forcing Grace to be completely encased in darkness 24/7. Another thing is that the new help she hired is a little bit shady. The third, more casual issue is that she and her children are suddenly terrorized by unseen visitors that clearly want them out of the house. Hark, more spoilers ahead!

“The Others” is the type of horror movie that could be deemed more eerie and unsettlingly than anything else. There are a few jump scares, sure, but the film monopolizes on slow burn imagery that’s sure to resurface in your brain at night. Kind of like the final scene, where Grace finally comes face-to-face with her unknown assailants. Having a séance. Since Grace and her children are the real ghosts.

The thing with the twist in “The Others” is that it makes the movie more shocking each time you watch it. Seemingly innocuous nuances are revealed to be heavy-hitter hints that Grace and her children are stuck in the afterlife, forever peering outside their grand windows, stuck in a fog for the rest of eternity. Have a happy rest of your day!
