Favorite queenly British historical drama: 'Victoria' or 'The Crown'?

Despite the best efforts of our forefathers in 1776, Americans remain enamored with British royalty. Just look at the near-manic fervor we have when it comes to British television, particularly that which surrounds the most royal figures of all: the Queen. Take, “Victoria,” the depiction of Queen Victoria and the love of her life, Albert. Or Netflix’s “The Crown,” which fleshes out the life of Queen Elizabeth II. Which show is your favorite?

People fail to realize that OG British royalty were BAMFs. Queen Victoria was no exception. She had her quirks, granted (who doesn’t?), but she wore the crown for over six decades, making her one of the longest reigning British monarchs. The 2016 ITV series, “Victoria” effectively captures this reign, fleshing out a woman who was never expected to become queen navigating a world that more often than not underestimates her.

The best part about “Victoria” is its depiction of Victoria and the love of her life, Albert. If there was ever a list of “Greatest Power Couples of All Times,” Victoria and Albert would make the top five. Albert was supportive of Victoria without smothering her, serving as an advisor and friend as much as a lover. Can you say “goals”?

What can we say that hasn’t already been said about “The Crown”? That it’s one of the most decadent productions ever produced? That it couldn’t have been better casted? That it took America’s already-existing Anglophilia and turned it up to 11? All of the above are well-known facts at this point—not opinions in the slightest.

Or maybe the real reason everyone’s so fascinated by “The Crown” is that it gives life to many who supposed Queen Elizabeth II is just some stuffy, sniffy matriarch. The series goes beyond the corgis to reveal a young woman that stands by duty and honor at the expense of her personal; a woman that struggles to keep a centuries-old institution both relevant and useful in unforgiving modern times. Even if you don’t get that deep with it, at least watch for the outfits.
