Favorite CBS comedy: 'The Big Bang Theory' or 'Young Sheldon'?

"The Big Bang Theory" and "Young Sheldon" are Monday night comedy smash hits for CBS. The long-running "The Big Bang Theory" is the top-rated sitcom, and paved the way for the spinoff "Young Sheldon." But some critics argue "Young Sheldon" is funnier and want to see "The Big Bang Theory" while it is still on top. "The Big Bang Theory" is ending after 12 seasons in 2019, and "Young Sheldon" will most likely continue on. But which series is CBS' best Monday night comedy?

Below is the synopsis of "The Big Bang Theory," per IMDb

A woman who moves into an apartment across the hall from two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

The smash hit sitcom holds an overall fresh rating of 81 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, at the time of publication. The show is in its 12th and final season. The long-running, highly-rated series will be missed by fans and is the reason for the spinoff "Young Sheldon." But USA Today's Bill Keveney argues it's time for the sitcom to end while on top:

Whatever the reason, it's the right move. After more than 250 episodes, "Bang" is still TV’s top-rated comedy – "Roseanne" briefly took that honor, but look where that is now – and likely will remain so. There was plenty of money to be made for everyone involved, and the departure will leave CBS, which successfully launched "Bang" prequel spinoff "Young Sheldon," with a huge scheduling hole. (Don't shed any tears. Although fans will soon be Penny-less, nobody connected to this money machine will leave penniless.)

Below is the synopsis of "Young Sheldon," per IMDb.

The early life of child genius Sheldon Cooper, later seen in The Big Bang Theory (2007).

The spinoff holds an overall fresh rating of 77 percent, at the time of publication. Although "The Big Bang Theory" is a highly-rated series, some argue that "Young Sheldon" is actually the funnier show. IndieWire's Ben Travers wrote:

The only issue: It deserves more than just “Big Bang Theory” fans. While created by Lorre and longtime “Big Bang” producer Steven Molaro, the single-camera series is developing nicely sans laugh track. Stylistically, it’s far removed from “Big Bang”; so much so, even those who hate the older version of Sheldon Cooper might like the story of his childhood.
The series aren’t in competition — they’re meant to feed interest in each other — but after examining episodes from the current seasons, it’s kind of surprising the franchise expansion is working:
“Young Sheldon” is so different from its timeslot lead-in, it’s surprising that so many fans of “The Big Bang Theory” are sticking around for the prequel.
Even more surprising: The darker, more emotionally resonant of the two is also the funnier option.
