Are the Beatles overrated?

The Beatles have been dubbed the best band in pop music history, but were the Fab Four really all that? Some say there are plenty of legit reasons to dislike them; superstar producer Quincy Jones threw serious shade at the Liverpudlians in a recent interview, calling them "the worst musicians in the world."  But whether you like their sound or not, they reinvented modern popular music and influenced nearly everything we listen to today. Do the Beatles live up to the hype? 🍏

Andre Averbug argues that you don't have to like the Beatles or dig their sound. But you do need to respect them, because most of your record collection wouldn't exist without them. Like James Brown and Prince, they changed the direction of popular music.

The Fab Four experimented and innovated like no other group. They dared with complex harmonies when others played only a handful of chords; synchronized vocals in a pioneering fashion; created novel arrangements and introduced new instruments; played from rock n’ roll to blues, ballads, folk, progressive, hard rock, psychedelic and songs that are even difficult to label; were original with their lyrics, studio work, videos, and attitude. They planted seeds that continue to germinate.

Drew Millard disagrees. You can be influential without being great. Also, just let people live! Art is subjective. Some people are not into the Beatles. There's no need to convince everyone to like what you like or to have a big freakout on the Internet because they don't.

Some people don’t like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Some people just don’t care for The Beatles. There’s not really a reason to get mad about it, y’know?

But Dan Ozzi says the Beatles' haters are the ones acting like dicks. Oh, you're so hip, hating the thing that everyone else likes! You must know more about music than anyone who has ever lived and listen to bands that don't even exist yet.

Every so often, some total dick will start going on about how The Beatles weren’t that good or were overrated or whatever other contrarian bullshit he wants to say about the band to get a rise out of people. And all I can say is: Shut up. Shut your stupid, idiot mouth, you dumb idiot. I’m not even defending The Beatles, per se. They’re not my favorite band or anything. But they’re...they are...what’s the word I’m looking for here? Oh right. THEY’RE THE FUCKING BEATLES, the musical foundation on which just about everything you listen to was probably built. Does that even need to be said? Being a music fan who shits on The Beatles is like standing in the comfort of your warm house and being like, “Yeah, wood is way overrated, dude. When you think about it, wood’s not really that great."

Still, plenty of people applauded Jones for dragging the Fab Four. And since he's won 28 Grammys over the course of nearly 70 years in the music industry, no one can say he's some contrarian snob who doesn't know what he's talking about.
