"The Batman" has gone through so many issues. First off, it's hard to make a great series of films following filmmaker Christopher Nolan and award-winning actor Christian Bale's "Dark Knight" trilogy.

Beyond that, Affleck stepped down as the director and there were mixed reports on whether or not he'll continue on with the series for years. Also, Affleck's script was scrapped, which is never a good sign. In many circles, studios would call this development hell, but now "The Batman" will focus on a younger Bruce Wayne/Dark Knight. Affleck finally got his wish to be let out of the role, following the mixed reactions to both "Batman v. Superman" and "Justice League."

Matt Reeves is fantastic, but can he really save this film after so many setbacks?

On the other hand, Affleck's performance in "Batman v. Superman" garnered praise, even though many critics, and fans, didn't like the film. Affleck is one of the only reasons fans like the movie at all.

Now, with Reeves set to direct, fans finally have hope, especially following the success of Reeves' "Planet of the Apes" prequels. That was a trilogy nobody thought was going to be any good and Reeves managed to transform the IP into a blockbuster franchise.

Reeves expressed his excitement about the project, back in the summer of 2018. According to Comic Book:

"From the beginning, what I had always spoken about with Warner Brothers and what I was excited about was being in the Batuniverse and really doing something within that sphere," Reeves said. "That was always what it was going to be so in that way it hasn’t changed a lot since I first met with them. It’s very much the same thrust if that makes sense."
"A lot of things have happened since then but the movie, and why I’m excited about it, is it continues to be the same inspirations and excitement of what we talked about in the beginning."

There were so many actors wanting to take on the role when there were mixed reports about Affleck. Now that the film is focused younger Batman with Robert Pattinson in the titular role and Zoe Kravitz co-starring as Catwoman. The hype for the film is also growing with first looks of the Batmobile and Pattinson as the Dark Knight.
