Is the Teen Choice Awards shallow?

Bella Thorne is not here for the Teen Choice Awards. Instead, she is boycotting the ceremony. Thorne is nominated in two different categories this year, but she believes the show is "gross, rigged, f'd up" and encourages kids to focus on appearance. The Teen Choice Awards honors teens and young adults in entertainment for their looks and accomplishments. But Thorne suggests the show should highlight entertainers for charitable acts and intellect, instead. Is the show shallow?

Thorne created the hashtag #BoycottingTeenChoice to alert her followers of the protest, and it's gaining traction. Many of her fans are standing with her and have agreed they will also boycott the show.

The Teen Choice Awards targets teens and was created to fit the demographic that outgrew the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. The Teen Choice Awards delegates awards across music, movies, TV, web, sports, video games and fashion categories. In 2017, Vanessa Hudgens won the "See Her" Award, which honored her for defying stereotypes and portraying real women in media.
