From the trailer, it's obvious that Efron has an uncanny resemblance to Bundy. It makes sense for someone as handsome and unassuming as Efron to play Bundy. The serial killer was also viewed as handsome and educated. Back in the '70s and '80s, people were shocked that such a well-spoken and attractive man like Bundy could commit murder, so the casting is very spot on.

Unfortunately, there are people who are attracted to serial killers and sympathize with them. Critics of the film say by casting such a handsome and well-known actor, Hollywood runs the risk of perpetuating the sexualization of a criminal. They argue the film may have an adverse affect on youth who just see the film and don't fully comprehend how sick Bundy was because they see their crush on the screen.
