Ultimate '10s superhero show: ‘Supergirl’ or ‘Luke Cage’?

Superhero TV shows have come a long, long way since the well-intentioned but generally cornball shows of earlier decades. Bigger budgets, better special effects, improved fight coordination and a greater respect for source material have all helped make the last ten years a golden age of comic book TV. We’re facing off the best-loved superhero shows of the decade, starting with DC's optimistic "Supergirl," and Marvel's hero of Harlem, "Luke Cage." Which do you love most?

In the first round, it's DC's "Supergirl," which follows an upbeat Kryptonian with vast superpowers versus Marvel's "Luke Cage," which chronicled the adventures of Harlem's bulletproof protector. Don't forget to click on the bracket below and cast your vote for your other superhero show matchups!

For quite a while, superhero shows were more about hard-hitting action and dark, tortured souls (DC’s “Arrow” and Marvel’s “Daredevil” are good examples). But "Supergirl" embraces a more wholesome, hero-forward approach, thanks largely to the charm of Melissa Benoist. “Supergirl,” like many other recent superhero shows, utilizes a team, some with powers and some without. Tyler Hoechlin shows up now and then as an especially noticeable guest star, playing a very un-Henry Cavill version of Superman.

In a sharp, smart update to the Blaxploitation-inspired Power Man, “Luke Cage” shows the bulletproof hero of Harlem as he struggles with the power dynamics of crime and politics. The series doesn’t shy away from referencing real-life examples from the current Black Lives Matter era, including Cage (Mike Colter) wearing a bullet-riddled hoodie in obvious tribute to Trayvon Martin. The show has also featured some A-plus acting from villains, including Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes.
