It's been more than 40 years, but the space battle between the "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" franchises continues. The highly-anticipated " Star Wars: The Last Jedi" hit theaters on Friday, Dec. 15, and the latest installment is expected to crush it at the box office (just like all the other "Star Wars" movies). Since "Star Trek: The Original Series" debuted in 1966—the franchise has produced an animated series, five more TV series, and 13 motion pictures. Which space franchise is the greatest? 🖖👽☄️

Trekkies have been loyal to the "Star Trek" franchise for 50 years now. That's half of a century! And that's a decade before "Star Wars" came to exist (cough cough... copy cat alert). The franchise was rebooted in 2009 and has since released two successful sequels. Now its returning to TV too. "Star Trek: Discovery" will feature its first Black female lead in 2017. "The Walking Dead" actress Sonequa Martin-Green will star. "Star Trek" has stood the test of time, and if the last 50 years is any indication, it will “live long and prosper.” 🖖

Watch a clip below from "Star Trek Beyond," the latest movie thus far.

Let's be real. The "Star Wars" franchise has topped the "Star Trek" franchise. "Star Wars" may have produced less work, but the franchise has brought in much more in the box office, and that's without nostalgic TV series backing it up. The franchise has made more than $7.7 billion worldwide, and the latest installment, "The Last Jedi" will crush it in the box office. "Star Trek" has only made $2.2 billion worldwide. So, ask yourself—doesn't a lightsaber triumph over the vulcan salute?
