If you want to rile up Trekkies, just ask them who's the best captain in the franchise. James Tiberius Kirk, portrayed by William Shatner, was the franchise's first real captain (sorry, Captain Pike fans) and later rebooted in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" film series (played by Chris Pine). But so many fans argue Jean-Luc Picard is actually the best captain, and we have the incredible Patrick Stewart to thank for keeping the "Star Trek" train going from the mid-1980s until the early 2000s. It's one of the most heated debates in the "Star Trek" franchise—who's the best captain? Shatner has been Captain Kirk for 52 years, but Stewart fanned new life into the franchise in the '80s. Who's the most iconic "Star Trek" captain?

Captain Kirk is so great that he has a WatchMojo top 10 list of his best fight moves.

Captain Kirk is the originator, and it's always hard to top the original.

But the fan-favorite Picard may be getting his own reboot. According to Den of Geek:

According to a THR article, there are unconfirmed rumors that CBS TV Studios is developing a Star Trek reboot starring Patrick Stewart in which he would reprise his The Next Generation role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. According to THR's sources, Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman are attached to the potential reboot. Not only is this an unconfirmed project, but THR's sources also say that the deal is far from complete and might not happen. Still, this would be huge news for Star Trek fandom—however you might feel about a Picard-centric reboot.
The rumors of the Picard reboot come amidst Kurtzman renewing his overall deal with CBS Television Studios, extending his contract by five years. This will keep him in partnership with the studio through 2023, for a reported $5 million per year.

And Captain Picard is a meme icon! That's how Trekkies know he's been the best captain ever since "Star Trek: The Next Generation" premiered in 1987.
