Marvel's "Spider-Man" on PS4 dropped in early September and immediately toppled sales records in the U.K, and it is expected to do the same in the U.S. Glowing reviews for the game continue to pour in, and talks of a new video game of the year contender have officially begun. Meanwhile, the other big name in the mix, "God of War," is not only called the greatest video game of the year by some, but one of the greatest video games of all time. A number of gaming publications choose a "game of the year"—a title reserved for games representing the height of gaming achievement for the year. In 2017, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" swept the majority of these awards. For 2018, few contenders have earned higher praise than Sony's "God of War." Until now.

Marvel's "Spider-Man" made no small impact on its opening weekend. The game demolished sales records in the U.K., and it is clear anticipation for the game bubbled over at the time of its release. IGN points out:

Spider-Man is a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and it blew away the year's previous best-selling exclusive, the PlayStation 4's God of War, by nearly twice as many units sold.

"God of War" fans praise the game as a status quo-breaking masterpiece. Whether it's the believability of the characters, the vividness of the setting, or the game's epic nature, reviewers across the board laud the game for creating a unique experience for gamers. Business Insider's Ben Gilbert writes of "God of War":

It's not just a really good game—it's an absolutely massive blockbuster that's full of surprises for even seasoned, cynical video game nerds like myself.

"Spider-Man" might lack the epic nature of "God of War," but it also exists in a different genre; it's a superhero game. According to Digital Trends

In the realm of open-world games, Marvel’s Spider-Man is one of the rare entries that doesn’t feel overfull, overlong, or wasteful. You’d be hard-pressed to find a stronger entry in the genre, and it’s a great superhero game to boot.

For some, the answer comes down to simple logic:

But for "God of War" fans, nothing can top the game's attention to detail.

Perhaps "Spider-Man" will win the day, but there's no question that "God of War" fans consider the game a timeless addition to the gaming universe.
