A Change.org petition to replace a Confederate monument in Portsmouth, Virginia, with a statue of hometown hero Missy Elliott, has more than 30,000 signatures. There's also a petition to replace Louisiana's Civil War statues with ones of Bayou State native Britney Spears. Many critics see these statues as monuments to slavery. But others find the idea incredibly disrespectful and insist we honor Confederate generals as heroes, instead of erasing U.S. history. What do you think?

The authors of the Missy Elliott petition point out that "Missy is everything the Confederacy was not" and say a monument to her would prove that "together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it."
Before she was "Missy Misdemeanor" she was Melissa Arnette Elliott, born on July 1, 1971 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Hailing from humble beginnings as the only child of a power company dispatcher and a welder at Portsmouth's lauded naval shipyard, she rose to become a platinum recording artist with over 30-million albums sold. All this without even once owning a slave.

Buzzfeed Matt Stopera writer completely supports this idea.

Who would want a statue of this stupid racist horse and some dusty old dude......when you could have a statue of someone with two diamond albums, a successful Las Vegas residency, and 287 perfumes?

Others think this idea is terrible.

Even some people who aren't fans of Confederate monuments think replacing them with statues of pop stars is stupid.

And others see the removal of Confederate monuments as an attack on their heritage—for them, replacing those statues with images of celebrities would only add insult to injury.

Some people are totally here for the celebrity statue idea, though.
