Should Ron Howard direct 'Hillbilly Elegy'?

Ron Howard is a highly-praised filmmaker, but some moviegoers aren't happy Howard has been tapped to direct J.D. Vance's 2016 memoir "Hillbilly Elegy." Critics call the memoir a "white trash–splainer" that misrepresents and exploits the white working class of Appalachia. Plus, Vance's detractors argue he and his book grossly mischaracterize the poor. Others are simply happy that a story about the white working class from the Appalachia is coming to the silver screen. Should the film be made? 🎥

Variety reports Imagine Entertainment is fully behind the adapted project.

Howard will produce with Imagine Entertainment chairman Brian Grazer and the company’s president, Erica Huggins. Julie Oh will oversee the project for Imagine. A writer has not yet been set.
“‘Hillbilly Elegy’ is a powerful, true coming-of-age memoir by JD Vance,” Huggins said. “Through the lens of a colorful, chaotic family, and with remarkable compassion and self-awareness, JD has been able to look back on his own upbringing as a ‘hillbilly’ to illuminate the plight of America’s white working class, speaking directly to the turmoil of our current political climate.”

New Republic's Sarah Jones called Vance the false prophet of Blue America back in November.

Elegy is little more than a list of myths about welfare queens repackaged as a primer on the white working class. Vance’s central argument is that hillbillies themselves are to blame for their troubles. “Our religion has changed,” he laments, to a version “heavy on emotional rhetoric” and “light on the kind of social support” that he needed as a child. He also faults “a peculiar crisis of masculinity.” This brave new world, in sore need of that old time religion and manly men, is apparently to blame for everything from his mother’s drug addiction to the region’s economic crisis.

Critics argue the memoir and Vance in general pathologizing the poor community.
