Shania Twain and Faith Hill were pioneers, ushering women of country music into the pop music world in the late '90s. Twain is literally the Queen of Country-Pop. She's the only woman in music to score three consecutive diamond-selling albums. Hill was already an established country darling when she dropped "This Kiss" in 1998, becoming her first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. She's gathered several multi-platinum albums and the biggest hit of 2000 with "Breathe." Who's your favorite? 🎤

Billboard's Taylor Weatherby wrote that Shania Twain and Faith Hill were among the top country queens who helped the cross over into the world of pop.

Spearheaded by crossover queens Shania Twain, Faith Hill and the Dixie Chicks, the late-‘90s country female movement also included Jo Dee Messina, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, Lee Ann Womack and LeAnn Rimes. The genre had seen its fair share of female superstars prior -- Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Reba McEntire, to name a few -- but the ‘90s brought the women of country to a worldwide level, reaching a pinnacle point in 1998.
The year began with Twain’s now-iconic 1997 album Come On Over (the biggest-selling album by a female artist to date) still holding strong at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart, Rimes’ “How Do I Live” sitting at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and McBride’s “A Broken Wing” earning the singer her second Hot Country Songs No. 1 and first Hot 100 hit. The end of January marked the Dixie Chicks’ major label debut with Wide Open Spaces, and come March, Hill made a much-anticipated return with a more pop-driven sound on “This Kiss,” which eventually hit the Hot 100’s top ten.

Twain scored three consecutive diamond-selling albums with "The Woman in Me" and "Come On Over" in the '90s, and "Up!" in the early aughts. She garnered major crossover girl-power anthems with "That Don't Impress Me Much," which details not being impressed with men who lack good qualities and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman," which openly embraces womanhood. These are only two of her big crossover country-pop hits, earning the title of Queen of Country-Pop.

Below are some significant lyrics to "Man! I Feel Like A Woman," per Genius.

🎶 Oh, oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy. Forget I'm a lady. Men's shirts, short skirts. Oh, oh, oh, oh, really go wild. Yeah, doin' it in style. Oh, oh, oh, oh, get in the action. Feel the attraction. Color my hair, do what I dare. Oh, oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free. Yeah, to feel the way I feel. Man! I feel like a woman! 🎶

"This Kiss" was Hill's first mega-crossover smash, peaking on the top 10 of the Hot 100 before Hill scored a few more crossover smashes with "Breathe" and "The Way You Love Me." "This Kiss" was nominated in the Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Grammy Award for Best Country Song categories at the 1999 Grammys. Hill lost to Twain's "You're Still the One." Regardless, "This Kiss" cemented Hill's crossover success. While she has no diamond-selling albums like Twain, Hill scored several multi-platinum albums: "Take Me as I Am," It Matters to Me," "Faith" and "Breathe," "Cry" and "Fireflies."

But these weren't her only feats. "Breathe" didn't top the Hot 100, but the smash came close by peaking at #2. This was an incredible feat for any country artist to crossover on the pop charts. The song had the longevity by becoming the top Billboard Hot 100 hit single of 2000.

Below are some significant lyrics to "Breathe," per Genius.

🎶 Because I can feel you breathe. It's washing over me. Suddenly I'm melting into you. There's nothing left to prove. Baby all we need is just to be. Caught up in the touch. The slow and steady rush. Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be. I can feel you breathe. Just breathe.🎶
