Christmas is annoying. Yeah, OK, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but when you see Christmas decorations before Halloween or hear carols in September, it’s hard not to feel grumpy by the time December rolls around. There are two Christmas grouches that fully represent this ode to resentment: Ebenezer Scrooge, the classic curmudgeon that has to deal with some pesky ghosts, and the Grinch, who can’t stand the holiday so much that he’s looking to steal it entirely. Who’s your favorite?

The main character in Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol,” Ebenezer Scrooge basically set the real, modern-day holiday feels about two centuries ago. Okay, yeah, he’s kind of the embarrassing uncle archetype, what with being stingy and the whole “decrease the surplus population” thing. But seriously, he’s reacting to otherwise irritating people just not leaving him alone.

Think about it: those people looking for donations are kind of like those annoying ads and emails that get served to you every day of your life looking for you to give away your life savings for something you don’t really care about. And those ghosts? The man just wants to sleep, okay, and they keep bugging him! Plus, let’s be real—he was the only one looking to put in the work that kept the lights on during Christmas. And what does he get? Haunted. Bah-humbug indeed, Scroogey.

The Grinch was full sass in a Santa hat. He couldn’t stand Christmas so much so that he took matters into his own hands and stole it within the span of one night. Who else do you know can do that, and all to one of the greatest themes of all times

Besides, as the internet once said: the Grinch didn’t really hate Christmas, just people. Or, more specifically, the people who overly love Christmas. Don’t act naïve, you know who they are, and they stink on ice! They’re the ones that play Mariah Carey at a bar in July, and who beat Christmas past dead horse-ness so much, they’ve stolen the love you had for it altogether. So, you know what—fight the good fight, Grinches of the world, and put those Whos in their place!
