Greatest soul singer: Sam Cooke or Otis Redding?

Born on January 22, 1931, Sam Cooke was dubbed the King of Soul for his effortlessly smooth vocals and trail-blazing influence on pop music. Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, including "You Send Me", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away." But others consider Otis Redding, who gave us "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and "Respect," the real King of Soul. Though Redding was influenced by Cooke, his style was more raw and gritty. Which soul singer is the greatest?🎤

AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music" and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice...that has never been surpassed." Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, plus three more after his death. "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", "Another Saturday Night", and "Twistin' the Night Away" are some of his most popular songs.

Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" was one of the most important songs of the civil rights era.

Like Cooke, Redding crossed over with white audiences, blowing the rock acts out of the water at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. According to the Daily Beast, the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir expressed the awe of the spectators at Redding's performance:

“I was pretty sure that I’d seen God onstage.”

Shortly before his tragic death in a plane crash, Redding wrote and recorded his iconic "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" with Steve Cropper. The song became the first posthumous #1 record on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. Rolling Stone lists Redding as one of the greatest musical artists of all time.

Otis had the softness of Sam Cooke and the harshness of Little Richard, and he was his own man.
