Scariest movie monster: Pennywise or Jason Voorhees?

Pennywise and Jason Voorhees are two avatars of pure evil that mowed down this year's competition in our annual Monster Madness bracket. Pennywise, an interdimensional evil that takes the form of a clown to feed off the fear of children is now facing off against Jason Voorhees, the little boy who grew from a desiccated corpse lying at the bottom of a lake to the biggest, baddest serial killer of all time. Which movie monster is scarier?

Pennywise the Clown, also known as It, crash landed in what is currently known as Derry, Maine eons ago, poisoning the town for all eternity. It takes the form that most scares It's victim, but It's favorite form is the malevolent clown, Pennywise. Pennywise has haunted Derry throughout history, responsible for several natural disasters and horrible massacres within the town's limits. Pennywise stirs the townspeople into violent frenzies and feeds off the chaos.

Pennywise, though, is ultimately defeated by a group of kids he tormented in their youth. Through a convoluted ritual involving biting Pennywise's tongue and enlisting the help of a psychedelic space turtle—for real–the kids of Derry beat the clown and free themselves of the curse.

Stephen King based the fictional town of Derry off his real hometown of Bangor, Maine, even going so far as to incorporate some real local tragedies in the book. In that way, Pennywise is not just some metaphysical evil, he's the embodiment of the violence that lurks underneath small towns across America. And isn't that more frightening than any movie monster?

The most recent version of "It" grossed over $700 million globally worldwide and the sequel is set to creep into theaters in 2019.

As far as movie monsters go, Jason Voorhees starts out pretty sympathetic. He was just a little kid who wanted to go swimming, got out a little too far and his camp counselors let him drown because they were too busy trying to bone. Tale as old as time! In the first "Friday the 13th" movie, Camp Crystal Lake is reopened years later only for its entire staff of horny teen counselors to be systematically slaughtered by Jason's mother, Pamela Voorhees.

Poor Pam is offed at the end of "Friday the 13th," but that doesn't stop her newly reanimated son from coming back to take his own revenge. After the first film, it is revealed that Jason is actually alive and fully grown. After offing the counselor who decapitated his mom, a super-tall, super-strong, super-hockey-mask-wearing Jason returns to Camp Crystal Lake to murder more teens who are too stupid to look for a different summer job.

At this point, there have been 10 movies in the Friday the 13th franchise and they get progressively nuttier as they go on—2001's "Jason X" puts Voorhees on a spaceship in the future... seriously. But just like Jason, these movies seem to be un-killable—when adjusted for inflation they've made an estimated $856 million globally in ticket sales alone and there are talks for more Jason movies in the future.

With Jason Voorhees, it's probably just best to stay out of the woods near Camp Crystal Lake, as you can see in the clip below.
