They say diamonds are a girl's best friend, but according to Vogue and rapper Young Thug that may change. The "Best Friend" rapper recently posted an Instagram story showing off his new layered pearl necklaces over diamond-encrusted chains. Some argue that diamonds are actually overrated, but they also have been the standard. Are pearls the latest fashion trend?

According to Priceonomics' Rohin Dhar, diamonds are BS because after you purchase them they lose value.

"American males enter adulthood through a peculiar rite of passage - they spend most of their savings on a shiny piece of rock. They could invest the money in assets that will compound over time and someday provide a nest egg. Instead, they trade that money for a diamond ring, which isn’t much of an asset at all. As soon as you leave the jeweler with a diamond, it loses over 50% of its value. "

Young Thug is known for pushing the fashion envelope. He once wore a leather kilt on his album cover. Check him out showing off his pearls on Instagram.

But according to Sarine, people will always want diamonds.

Another reason why people want diamonds is also one of the most simple: they are beautiful. Clear, sparkly and filled with light, their brilliance is unmatched among other gems. And, with the prevalence of media in today’s generation, advertising also plays a huge role in the desire for a diamond. After all, who wouldn’t want to invest in something that lasts “forever”?
