The epic of all epics, Homer’s “Odyssey”—a sort of sequel to “The Iliad”—tells the story of the amazing travels and adventures of Telemachus, and his estranged father, Odysseus. It is without doubt one of the most influential stories in western history, a truly foundational text. Everything from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” to “The Wind in the Willows” to “Star Wars: A New Hope” bears signs of its influence. Even the Starbucks logo refers to the sirens in the "Odyssey" (though Starbuck was a character in “Moby Dick”). Hear a sample of "Odyssey" performed in classical Greek below.

One of the most well-loved epics in the history of the world, the "Mahabharata" began as oral tradition before becoming a massive Sanskrit poem. It’s equal parts fantasy and generational tale of love and conquest, gods, demons, and magic. It is revered by Hindus and Jains for beauty and moral truths, and loved beyond that for the scope of it’s storytelling. Historically, the "Mahabharata" was performed in a lavish festival style, but was also popular as a source for song and dance performances. It has been filmed numerous times, from the 1930s to present day.

Listen to a super adorable and sharp kid recite a portion of the "Mahabharata" below.
