Steve Buscemi is an approachable actor who has delighted audiences for years. But Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson has made people collectively crap themselves with each “Boardwalk Empire” airing. This was no Donny persona; this was a person that was way, way more detestable.

Sure, we loved Nucky Thompson for taking advantage of Prohibition and acting like the gangster of Atlantic City. We loved him for his smooth ways and his no-nonsense attitude. But he sold out a lot of people—people he supposedly loved and cared about—for his own gain. Even with all those baller pinstripe suits, that’s seldom an admirable quality.

It’s near-impossible not to be charmed by Tommy Shelby, almost as much as it’s impossible not to adopt a Birmingham accent after hearing the words “The Peaky FOOKING Blinders” regularly throughout the show. He’s seen some nonsense during the First World War, usually cleans up after his family, and is constantly torn between what’s right and, well, what’s not. He’s a bad man trying to be good (we think), and what’s more captivating in a character than that?

Cillian Murphy plays the complex character (who was actually voted “The Greatest TV Character of All Time” on LADbible) with a calculating quiet that gives the impression he’s a tightened spring—supposedly unassuming, but ready to strike at any moment. So, basically, try not to mess with him or his son, okay?
