Favorite zany Nick cartoon: ‘Danny Phantom’ or ‘Invader Zim’?

In what is clearly an effort to directly compete against Disney+, Nickelodeon and Netflix recently announced a long-term partnership that promises us new original content, some of which is based on old series we already love. In fact, fans are already hoping two series will get revamps. One is “Danny Phantom,” a story about a superhero that’s half boy, half ghost. The other is “Invader Zim,” which is about a tiny alien with big Earth-taking-over aspirations. Which was your favorite?

Imagine that your parents are professional ghost hunters, and that one of their experiments merges your DNA with ectoplasm. Now set that concept against a sick beat of an opening, and you have “Danny Phantom,” an original Nickelodeon series all about Danny, his battle against supernatural crime, and the much-shipped sexual tension between him and his best friend, Sam.

Anywho, apart from the sick opener, “Danny Phantom” was a pretty dope show all around, especially for a kids’ cartoon. The animation was boss, and the plot perfectly balanced the dark trials of teenagerhood with thoughts of the afterlife. Talk about existential…

If you’ve ever walked into a Hot Topic, you’re familiar with “Invader Zim.” The place is filled with items reflecting the (oft-screaming) little green, red-eyed alien that’s perpetually salty. If you ever thought the animation itself was weird, try giving the show a whirl (if you haven’t already). It’s way weirder than you could imagine (and also somehow sparked a ton of NSFW fan art posted on Twitter which, again, seriously, what is your problem, internet?).

The basic plotline is that the titular alien, Zim, gets sent on a bogus mission to invade some planet. He lands on Earth, thus beginning a wild ride which includes a few things that make you really question how it was ever considered an appropriate show for children (see above note with regards to fan art). We can only imagine how much more Nickelodeon and Netflix would further push these boundaries should a revamp come to fruition (apart from “Enter the Florpus,” of course). Let’s keep it to at least the PG-13 level, please.
