Favorite underrated Nickelodeon cartoon: 'ChalkZone' or 'My Life as a Teenage Robot'?

The nineties and early aughts had some pretty sweet cartoons. However, there were a few gems released in this era that, although beloved, never garnered as much popularity as others. Nickelodeon held claim to two such gems. The first was “ChalkZone,” a series surrounding a boy who can enter another dimension with magical chalk. Then there’s “My Life as a Teenage Robot,” a charming show all about, well, a teenage robot. Which was your favorite?

The best scene in “Mary Poppins” is, incontestably, when Mary and the gang jump into their chalk drawings. Nickelodeon took the straight chills from that scene and turned it into an entire show. “ChalkZone” follows the story of Rudy, a typical elementary school kid with an atypical talent: He can enter his own chalk drawings that have formed the universe, ChalkZone, where he meets and befriends a bunch of zany, distinctly outlined characters.

The thing that was so great about “ChalkZone” is that it gave kids the idea that, hey, maybe their imagination could allow for them to enter into some other dimension with endless opportunities. Don’t act like you’ve never tried jumping into your own chalk creations on the sidewalk.

“My Life as a Teenage Robot” is about exactly what the title says. Jenny, (or, technically, XJ-9) is a teenage robot that not only has to deal with puberty, but deal with puberty as a machine (think about that the next time you have to update your phone). It’s a charming story about accepting yourself as well as those around you. The only downside is that it has one of the most terrifying episodes in all of kids’ show history which involves sentient skin. Don’t believe me? Take a look

In retrospect, “My Life as a Teenage Robot” was way ahead of its time. At its core, it was a story about someone navigating a world that was more-often-than-not adverse to their differences. Jenny didn’t ask to be a robot; she just is one. She and her peers teach each other acceptance in a way that “Degrassi” never could. Suck it, Drake.
