Nickelback rose to prominence in the early aughts, but since their reigning days of crossover pop success, they've become one of the most hated rock bands in the world. Nevertheless, the band sold more than 50 million records worldwide and helped define the sound of modern rock. Still, Nickelback is made fun of all over the Internet, being called names like "terrible," "cheesy" and "cockroaches" of rock. OUCH! What do you think—is the band really that bad? 🎤😫

Nickelback is hated, huh? Well, the band sold more than 50 million worldwide. "Silver Side Up" is regarded as the band's breakthrough album, being released in 2001 and featuring mega-hit "How You Remind Me."

Unpopular opinion, but some may argue that hatred of Nickelback shows they are actually underrated. Noisey's Drew Millard wrote:

Have you ever listened to Nickelback’s 2008 album Dark Horse? If not, I urge you to do so immediately. It’s produced by Mutt Lange, the same guy who helmed AC/DC’s Highway to Hell and Back in Black, all the good Def Leppard albums, plus all the Shania Twain albums people remember. Dark Horse sounds, essentially, like an updated version of those AC/DC and Def Leppard records. Its songwriting is tight, every song is catchy as fuck, and the melodies are at least as compelling as anything on that War on Drugs album everybody liked from last year. If you recall, 2008 was also the year that Guns N Roses’ Chinese Democracy was released to the enthusiasm of absolutely no one who doesn’t still live with their mom. If GNR had released Dark Horse instead of Nickelback, it would have been hailed as a surprising, vital return to form. Regrettably, the album had the misfortune of being released by Nickelback, so nobody gave it a chance.

Nickelback recorded smashes like "How You Remind Me," which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Or did y'all forget how popular they were in the aughts? Hmph!

But critics argue that all of Nickelback's music is cheesy and sounds too similar. Over the period of the last two decades, they've become the go-to punchline for scathing music critiques.

Nickelback is mocked for cheesy songs like "Photograph." Yet, the song was a smash success in 2005, peaking at #2 on the Hot 100. That did not stop "Look at this photograph" from becoming one of the Internet's most hilarious Nickelback memes. Again—only one of them!

Watch the music video for the arguably cheesy song below. We mean, if you have time and don't value sound (some would say, heh).

Some critics argue Nickelback is so bad that today's crappy artists are being compared to the band—like The Chainsmokers.

But The Chainsmokers are winning at pop and EDM! Nickelback might be hated, but they also won from the early-to-mid aughts. So, the Chainsmokers drank the haterade and responded with a mashup of their hit "Paris" with Nickelback's "How You Remind Me."
