“The Grudge” reboot has a few of the same elements as the original, sure. But its trailer already houses a few promising new aspects to the terrifying tale. For one thing, the new film is set in the United States as opposed to having Sarah Michelle Gellar hang out in Japan. For another it has Lin Shaye in it, who’s holds her own horror movie acting chops, “Insidious” being one of many scary series she’s been in.
There’s also John Cho. If you get too scared while watching it, his image on screen can be like a lighthouse on a stormy ocean: light-filled and guiding you back to non-scary shores. Have fun trying to sleep afterwards, though!
Hollywood—can we get new movies, please? The original American “Grudge” as well as the original original Japanese version, “Ju-On,” were scary enough. Hell, after all this time, it’s still scary. Why can’t you just put John Cho and Lin Shaye in a new horror franchise for us to love?
Rebooting “The Grudge” feels like yet another cheap way in getting our money. We’ll skip it, thank you very much.
