Best must-watch Netflix sci-fi thriller: 'Bird Box' or 'Black Mirror: Bandersnatch'? | The Tylt
"Bird Box" and "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" became all the buzz during the holidays in late 2018. Binge-watchers were anticipating the interactive "Black Mirror" event, and Netflix waited until the final Friday of 2018 to drop the full-length, 90-minute episode "Bandersnatch." "Bird Box" fans were raving about the Netflix original film throughout the holidays. The must-watch thriller even took over the Internet in all its meme glory. Which Netflix original is the must-watch sci-fi thriller?

Below is the synopsis of "Bird Box," per Rotten Tomatoes:
When a mysterious force decimates the world's population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they'll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded. Academy Award (R) winner Sandra Bullock leads an all-star cast that includes Trevante Rhodes, with Sarah Paulson, and John Malkovich in BIRD BOX, a compelling new thriller from Academy Award (R) winner Susanne Bier.
"Bird Box" holds a fresh rating of 65 percent and an audience score of 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The Netflix original film's success is partially due to word-of-mouth promotion. Everyone on the Internet is talking about the sci-fi/horror/thriller, and as time goes on, more and more Netflix viewers seem to be jumping on the bandwagon. Iconic film critic Richard Roeper wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times that "Bird Box" is "Great, shudder-inducing stuff."
For a stretch, “Bird Box” feels like one of those zombie-apocalypse movies or TV series where the real story isn’t about the monsters clawing at the door — it’s about the depths some humans will sink in order to survive, while others surprise even themselves with their heroics. (Hello, “The Walking Dead.”)

Below is the synopsis of "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch," per Rotten Tomatoes:
In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge.
At the time of publication "Bandersnatch" does not have a rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the interactive "event" still has a lot of buzz. Janko Roettgers wrote for Variety that Netflix takes the art of the storytelling and audience engagement to the next level with "Bandersnatch":
The result is “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” Netflix’s first-ever interactive movie for adults, which debuted on the service Friday. Set in 1984, “Bandersnatch” is the story of geeky teenager Stefan (played by Fionn Whitehead of “Dunkirk” fame) who sets out to turn a multiple-choice science-fiction book by the same title into a pioneering computer game that also presents the player with a series of choices.
Early on, we learn that eccentric author of the original “Bandersnatch” book descended into madness while writing the multiple-choice adventure, ultimately killing his wife. And it’s not too much of a spoiler to say that Stefan is struggling with his own inner demons — and single-handedly turning the book of a madman into a highly complex multiple-choice computer game doesn’t exactly seem to improve his mental health.
Whew! "Bandersnatch" is a thriller that the viewers can control, which can only enhance the suspense. Watch the trailer to the sci-fi "Black Mirror" event below, and tell us if you really feel like you're in the control seat.
