Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks are two of the world's most iconic supermodels. Both have broken barriers for women of color in fashion, but they are also very different. Campbell was only 18 years old when she became the first Black supermodel to grace the cover of "French Vogue," and she still slays the catwalk today. Banks was the first Black woman to cover "Sports Illustrated," and she taught us how to smile with our eyes or "smize." Which icon is your favorite?

Naomi Campbell is still a pillar in fashion. Vogue's Janelle Okwodu asks, what is fashion without Campbell?

Whether or not she meant it, the prospect of a modeling world without Campbell is daunting, as unlike most of the supers, she never fully left the industry. Where many others have taken time off to raise families, rebranded their careers, or simply faded into obscurity, Campbell has nearly remained a constant. Still as relevant now as she was in her ’90s heyday, her career sits at the pinnacle of the industry, from opening doors for black models to serving as a muse for the best designers. To this day, she gets a standing ovation when she deigns to walk a show and makes headlines with each new project.

Tyra Banks recently came out of model retirement to cover Sports Illustrated. It was only right for the supermodel to grace the cover considering it has been 23 years since she last did it. But Banks is known for more than just taking amazing photos, she taught us how to smize! The New York Times' Lynn Hirschberg reminded us that Banks reinvented the smile.

From the start of her career, when she was virtually plucked from an all-girl Catholic high school in Los Angeles and whisked off to Paris, to her days as a mass-market first-name-only supermodel strutting the catwalk in her underwear for Victoria’s Secret, Banks always treated modeling as a kind of beautiful science. Then, and now, the smiles were her secret weapons: they could compel, manipulate, seduce. Banks did not become a model to be a muse to designers or because she loved fashion. Modeling — and smiling — was a skill that could, if engineered and managed carefully, change the course of your life.
